Corticosteroids: early psychiatric side-effects

Your doctor or nurse will keep an eye on any side effects from your treatment. Let them know if there are any changes while you are on hormone therapy, or if you get any new symptoms. If there is a rise in your PSA level, this may be a sign that your cancer has come back.

Are Anabolic Steroids Illegal?

Pancreatic enzyme replacement therapy (PERT) helps to manage these problems with digestion. It replaces the enzymes that your pancreas would normally make. Common brands include Creon®, Nutrizym®, Pancrease® and Pancrex®. Some areas have walking groups that you could join, which could help you improve your strength and meet new people.

• You will need to take five tablets a day for five days in a row.
• However, a small number of the drugs used for IBD should not be taken when trying to conceive a baby or by women once they are pregnant.
• If you are at an increased risk of osteoporosis, your doctors might suggest a dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) scan to keep a check on your bone density.
• Take prednisolone with food to reduce the chances of stomach problems.
• If this happens and you stop taking steroids suddenly, it can lead to a lack of the steroid hormone cortisol within your body.

Always tell other doctors, nurses, pharmacists or dentists that you’re having this treatment. For example, if you need treatment for anything else, including teeth problems. There is evidence that steroid drugs may come through into your breast milk. You can make a decision together based on the benefits to you and the possible risks to your baby.

Living with a brain tumour: Taking steroids

However, the risks are not considered great as with many other prescription and over-the-counter (OTC) medicines. Most doctors who prescribe anabolic–androgenic steroids (AAS) acknowledge that taking steroids and drinking alcohol in moderation is okay and unlikely to cause any problems. Health professionals who are not specialists in MS, including some GPs and A&E staff, may not realise that a high dose of steroids is needed to treat a relapse. If you are unable to contact your MS team, you may need to bring this to the attention of any health professional who offers you steroid treatment.

Some medicines must also be taken in particular ways – for example, at particular times of day, on an empty stomach, or with or after food. If your lifestyle anabolicsteroid makes it difficult to for you to do this, try discussing it with your doctor. It may be that some compromise or alteration in the dose is possible.

Less common side effects

However, anything taken by mouth will start to dissolve very quickly, so many of the tablets and capsules have a special ’gastro-resistant’ coating. This makes sure the drug is released in the right part of the digestive system – usually the small intestine (small bowel) or large intestine (colon). This is why it can be important to swallow tablets or capsules whole and not to break or crush them.

Steroids can sometimes affect diabetes, high blood pressure or epilepsy, so you’ll have your blood pressure and blood sugar levels checked from time to time. The person treating you might change the dose of your medications if needed. Steroids can sometimes cause diabetes or raised blood sugar in people who haven’t previously had this condition. Long term abuse of steroids may lead to more serious health conditions such as heart and liver disease, kidney problems and damage to the reproductive system.

And it wasn’t to do with pain, it was to do with the fact that I wasn’t coping. The one area where I am aware of steroid affecting me is kind of, mental, is in my brain. Because that could be a factor you know, just you’re not used to working. I just sort of, I think, wakened up one morning and could hardly get out of bed.

I think I had my last hair treatment in December and then I was told in January I would have, had to go back on to the methotrexate again and the steroids. So [sighs], yeah, so now I don’t even bother, I just normally put it up in a ponytail [laughs]. Yeah, it was, I’m sure it was the cyclophosphamide that they were saying, it’s quite a, quite a harsh drug, if you like or, to give the initial kickstart of the recovery, if you like. ” You know, I was reacting in a way that just was totally abnormal for me.
